During a pit stop, Edwards’ gas man had an unusual problem. Fuel escaped from the long-necked fuel can, which normally shuts off wihen withdrawn from the car. The spill somehow found a spark.
While gas burned on the track, the flame found the gas man’s uniform. After realizing his fire suit was aflame, he and teammates tried to pound it out.
No one was injured, according to Edwards’ team.
After Jimmie Johnson won the Sprint Cup race, with Edwards finishing 12th, the Xfinity race began.
During it, driver Spencer Gallagher’s gas man had his own issue.
Gallagher drew a penalty — removing equipment from assigned pit area — and served a stop-and-go. During which, of course, the gas can was retrieved.
